Learn to Learn Project is a dialogue project implemented by the Turkey Youth Union Association in partnership with the Zagreb Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, funded under the Civil Society Dialogue between the EU and Turkey - IV Education Grant Scheme.
The project brought together these two civil society organisations to learn from each other's expertise in the field, share best practices and adopt inclusive methods for Deaf people. The potential and skills of Deaf and hearing impaired individuals are significantly overlooked in the field of education, vocational training and employment. Based on our experience in the field of disability rights, especially our work with Deaf youth since 2007, we developed a project idea to take our previous work one step further and create a sustainable impact on the active participation of Deaf people in society. The aim of our project is to improve the quality of lifelong learning of Deaf adults through Non-Formal Education (NFE) methods and by contributing to the social inclusion and active representation of Deaf people in society. Within the scope of the project
1- Technical information on Deaf studies, the current situation in Croatia and Turkey, the status of the current education system for Deaf adults and good practices in both countries were shared.
2- 11 Deaf adults were trained to organise workshops on human rights using non-formal education methods with 100 Deaf adults in 4 pilot cities. As the Deaf-to-Deaf transfer approach yielded successful results and these 11 facilitators were seen as role models by the Deaf participants, other Deaf adults were inspired and motivated to become facilitators.
has been achieved.
3- The capacity of non-governmental organisations working with Deaf people in terms of non-formal education has been increased.
4- A kit was prepared on the learning styles and learning needs of Deaf adults and inclusive non-formal education methods to be used in the education of Deaf adults. You can access the kit from this link.
5- A report on alternative non-formal education methods in the field of education of deaf adults has been prepared to be shared with the Ministry of National Education.
In the light of the above-mentioned successful results of the project, we will continue to support the use of non-formal education methods in the field of lifelong learning of Deaf adults, preferably with Deaf individuals who know sign language as a transmitter or facilitator. We hope that the hard copy and electronic version of this book will reach as many people as possible, especially adult education centres and non-governmental organisations, for use in local, national or international activities.
Because education is a fundamental human right and is for everyone...
